While practical experience and a knowledge of the principles of pedagogy are of great value in the training of the teacher, it is doubtful whether a person with a nervous, and irritable disposition can ever be successful. The calm, magnetic temperament, the keen interest which makes the imparting of information a pleasure, the reserve of mental power that enables one to go through a long hard day with unwearied spirit and everlasting good nature - all these may be cultivated, but they cannot be created, and unless a teacher has begun his apprenticeship with a broad human sympathy for those under his charge, the sooner he stops trying to teach and goes into some other business, the better.
