Excerpt from An Introduction to Physical Measurements: With Appendices on Absolute Electrical Measurement, Etc
The Author, in the preface to the second German edition, gives a sketch of the purposes which he hopes that the pre sent book will serve. He says, a truth which all experience confirms, that the mere verbal teaching of physical laws is seldom of much use, tending frequently merely to confuse the student; while the simple performance of an experiment gives him confidence in himself and in the laws he is investi gating, and leads him, by means of measurements which can be independently verified, to that knowledge of his powers which is so important when he has to do any original work. Since the greater part of the treatise is devoted to measure ments of physical quantities, we have thought its object better expressed by the title we have given it than by a literal translation of the German one.
Descriptions of apparatus are but rarely given, as students mostly have instruments provided for them, and seldom have to make their own apparatus, or to put it together.
The mathematical knowledge required is but very ele mentary, as the proofs of the formulae are only given when they present no complex arguments.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book enables you to measure physical quantities by using little more than a ruler, a balance, and a few other simple tools, demonstrating that basic experiments yield valuable insights into the fundamental laws of nature. With detailed instructions, it allows even beginners in physics to perform meaningful experiments, helping them to improve their understanding of and develop skills in the core scientific practices of observation, inference, and data analysis. The author emphasizes the historical and philosophical context of physics, tracing its evolution through real-life examples. These examples and the book's hands-on approach encourage a wider understanding of the place of physics in human experience and of the ways scientific breakthroughs occur.
