Some apology may perhaps be expected for obtruding upon the public a new translation of these celebrated letters. By those, however, who are acquainted with the spirit and beauties of the original, and whom interest or curiosity has excited to compare the merits of the former translation, little will be required. To say nothing of its language or fidelity, it is exclusively so imperfect, that although the letters of Zilia are multiplied to the number of forty-five, several of the principal, and most interesting, are entirely omitted. The whole are for the first time comprized in the present edition.
