Excerpt from Notes on Observations: Being an Outline of the Methods Used for Determining, the Meaning and Value of Quantitative Observations and Experiments in Physics and Chemistry, and for Reducing the Results Obtained

The following pages are intended to assist a beginner in realizing the value of the quantitative results, which he himself and others have obtained, in physical and chemical experiments.

Questions involving higher mathematics and disputed proofs are omitted as unsuited to the object of the book; but it is hoped that the references given may be of assistance to those who desire to pursue the subject more thoroughly.

No attempt is made to give a complete account of the method of least squares, but only an outline sufficient to enable one unacquainted with mathematics to use it for practical purposes.
