Sinopsis

Excerpt from The Life of Tolstoy: First Fifty Years

The reason I have written this work is because so many among us are interested in Tolstoy and so few seem to under stand him. It would seem therefore that an English Life of Tolstoy is needed, and having lived in Russia for twenty three years, known Tolstoy well for several years, visited him frequently in Moscow, and stayed with him repeatedly at Yasnaya Polyana, I am perhaps as well qualified as any one to write it, especially as I have long made a careful study of his views. My wife and I have translated several of his works, have known people closely connected with him, and some ten years ago we took part in an unsuccessful 'tolstoy' Colony; besides which 1 went to Canada at his wish to make arrangements for the Doukhobor migration, of which I subsequently wrote the history.

Moreover, I am impartial. That is to say, I have taken pains to understand Tolstoy's views, and to see the good there is in them but being a Westerner, I see'also certain things Tolstoy overlooks, and I know that these things knock big holes in some of his most cherished 'principles.'

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Leo Tolstoy, one of Russia's most celebrated writers. The author, who lived in Russia for over two decades and knew Tolstoy personally, traces Tolstoy's life from his birth in 1828 to his fiftieth year, delving into his ancestry, childhood, and early experiences that shaped his unique perspective on life and society. The narrative weaves together personal anecdotes, family history, and detailed accounts of Tolstoy's formative years. You'll discover how his upbringing on the family estate of Yasnaya Polyana, his relationships with his siblings, and his early encounters with both the privileged and the impoverished of Russian society left a lasting impact on his worldview. The book explores Tolstoy's early literary ambitions, his experiences in the Crimean War, and his travels abroad, all of which contributed to the development of his moral and philosophical ideas. Through the author's keen insights, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the roots of Tolstoy's radical critique of conventional society, his explorations of faith, and his enduring legacy as a literary giant who challenged the norms of his time. This book is a rich and intimate portrait of a complex and influential figure, offering a compelling narrative that illuminates the origins of Tolstoy's remarkable ideas.
