Excerpt from In Galicia: Austrian Poland
The drafting of the following pages was originally commenced in the form of a letter to the Times. But as the work progressed, it assumed proportions beyond anything for which any journal could he expected to find room, more especially at such a time as the present. I therefore determined to write a short letter to the Times, giving merely the main points, and to publish the longer letter with considerable additions in the form of a pamphlet. I desire to express my grateful acknowledgments to the Editor of the Times for giving me the opportunity of calling the attention of those of its readers who care to pursue the subject to this longer statement, and also for his courtesy in permitting me to reprint in full the correspondence which appeared in its columns in the months of April and May. This will be found in an Appendix at the end of this pamphlet.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. Embark on a journey to early 20th-century Galicia, a region steeped in historical and cultural complexities. This book delves into the heart of a religious and political struggle that unfolded amidst the backdrop of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The author, an Englishman, takes on the role of an investigator, seeking to unravel the truth behind allegations of religious persecution against the Ruthenian population, who sought to maintain their Eastern Orthodox faith and cultural identity. The narrative explores the intricate interplay between religion, language, and politics, as the Ruthenians face pressure to conform to the dominant Polish and Catholic influences. The author's firsthand account paints a vivid picture of the challenges faced by the Ruthenian people, their unwavering devotion to their faith, and their resistance against attempts to suppress their cultural heritage. Through meticulous observations and conversations with the local population, the author sheds light on the methods employed by the authorities to enforce religious and linguistic assimilation. The book delves into the historical roots of the conflict, tracing the complex relationship between the Ruthenians, Poles, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It unveils the impact of political maneuvering, the role of influential figures, and the resilience of a community determined to preserve its identity. This book offers a compelling exploration of faith, cultural identity, and the fight for religious freedom in a turbulent historical context.
