Excerpt from French Prophets of Yesterday: A Study of Religious Thought, Under the Second Empire
Is France, the land of the Crusaders, the eldest daughter of the Church, irrevocably lost to Christianity? Such is the problem upon which this book would attempt to throw some light.
That Anti-clericalism, or opposition to the political influence of the Church, is one of the cardinal principles of the Third Republic, cannot be doubted for a moment. Active resistance to "the encroachments of Rome" was the policy, not of narrow fanatics and hot-headed Radicals alone, not merely of brilliant and somewhat erratic individuals like M. Clémenceau, but of men like Gambetta, Jules Ferry, Waldeck-Rousseau, in every respect the strongest and sanest statesmen of the regime. Anticlericalism in France is not a passion, not a crisis, but, as Waldeck-Rousseau put it, a permanent necessity. So far, at least, England and America find it easy to sympathise with the French Republic. No democracy can tolerate the intervention of theocracy in its purely secular affairs. England never brooked Popery as a political power; and the United States would be as impatient of such interference, if it were proved to exist on a national scale, as over England or Franco. On this point French Protestants are unanimous, and the great majority of moderate and tolerant Catholics tacitly agree with the great majority of fair-minded free-thinkers.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a remarkable tableau of French religious thought during the Second French Empire by examining its wealth of theological, metaphysical, and positivist expressions. The author places special emphasis upon the once dominant Catholic ideology, whose strength was found in the masses, even as it became thoroughly entangled with reactionary political thought. In contrast, Protestantism, despite its lack of popular appeal, still counted major thinkers among its adherents, struggling to articulate their faith amidst the increasing secularism of the age. The book further explores the rise of Voltairianism after a period of decline, owing in no small part to the repressive measures employed by the Catholic Church, as well as the concurrent growth of Romantic Humanitarianism, which, despite its initial literary leanings, soon lent itself to the articulation of political and social beliefs. The final section of the book examines the period's significant writers and thinkers, luminaries such as Sainte-Beuve, Taine, and Renan, who sought to grapple with the religious questions of the day and whose thought continues to influence perspectives on spirituality to this day.
