This book, first published in 1895, offers an in-depth analysis of the development of the science of public finance as an independent branch of economics. The author provides a comprehensive account of the evolution of financial science, tracing its roots back to the Physiocrats and the Cameralists. He explores the theoretical underpinnings of the discipline and discusses various approaches to taxation, including the single tax and progressive taxation. The book also examines the historical development of public economies and the increasing role of the state in the economic life of nations. By synthesizing history, theory, and analysis, the author demonstrates the significance of public finance in understanding the broader context of economics and social policy.

Excerpt from Science of Finance, Vol. 1
Under the auspices of the University of Chicago. Dr. Veblen has made a translation of my System der Finanswissenschaft. which he is about to publish with the approval of the German publisher. In response to a wish expressed by the translator, 1 do not hesitate to say that a reading of the proof-sheets has satisfied me (so far as 1 am a competent judge) of the excellence of the translation. I can therefore only express the hope that my book may in this new form meet with as cordial a welcome beyond the sea as has already been accorded to many books of mine in the original.
