Sinopsis

Discover the science behind radio-activity and how it reshaped atomic physics. This accessible introduction traces the birth of the field, from Becquerel’s surprising findings to Marie and Pierre Curie’s landmark work, and explains how radioactive elements reveal the inner structure of matter. You’ll learn what radium and related elements do, and how their rays help scientists probe the atom.

Radio-activity is explained in clear terms, with the experiments, discoveries, and ideas that shaped early research. The book blends history with core concepts, showing how researchers tested theories and built new models of the atom.

  • How radio-active substances emit different kinds of rays and what those rays tell us about atomic structure

  • The roles of radium, thorium, uranium, and polonium in early discoveries

  • How scientists study radiation through electrical effects, ionisation, and spectroscopic observations

  • Foundations of the electron theory as it relates to radio-activity and atomic disintegration

Ideal for readers curious about the origins of radio-activity, the history of science, and the basic physics that underpins modern atomic theory.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Science of Radio-Activity

IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give a concise and popular account of the properties of the radio active elements and the theoretical conceptions which are introduced by the study of radio-active phenomena. This work, as its title indicates, does not claim to be more than an introduction to the subject, and no attempt has been made at exhaustive treatment. Following what has appeared to me to be the most lucid method of presenta tion, I have divided the subject into three parts: descrip tive, theoretical, and practical; the last being added in the hope that the comparatively simple experiments described may be of interest to those wishing to investi gate for themselves some of the remarkable properties of the radio-active elements.
