Sinopsis

A practical guide to the core questions of ethics, focused on how we should live and judge conduct. This book aims to separate morality from other ways people justify behavior and to show how a practical moral sense can guide everyday choices. It emphasizes a clear, usable approach to ethics rather than abstract puzzles.

In this edition, the author explains the aims of the work, its relation to religion, and how morality can be studied as an independent subject. The emphasis is on applying moral ideas to real life, with chapters that explore the sources of our moral judgments, how they are formed, and how they can be improved. The result is a work that connects theory with practice, and that invites readers to examine their own beliefs in light of practical consequences.

  • How morality differs from other calls to action and why that matters in daily life.

  • What the moral sentiment is, and how its claims to authority can be justified.

  • How our sense of right and wrong develops, and how to educate it for better judgment.

  • A practical test for evaluating conduct and applying moral ideas to real situations.

Ideal for readers of philosophy, ethics, and anyone seeking a clearer, more usable approach to moral questions in everyday life.

The other remark, which will require a some what longer statement, is that, in the present treatise, Morality will be discussed as an inde pendent science, that is to say, on grounds dis tinct from religious and theological considerations. That the conceptions of Religion and Morality are intimately connected, and that, when we have constituted a system of morality on inde pendent grounds, it is inevitable that we should compare with it our religious convictions, I, of course, do not for a moment deny. Religion is more than Morality; it is the consecration and idealisation of it in a Perfect Being, whom we are constrained to revere, adore, and love. But there is a Wide difference between Religion as an aspiration of the human soul and par ticular systems of religious doctrine and worship.

These pages represent an attempt to exhibit a scientific conception of morality in a popular form, and with a view to practical applications rather than the discussion of theoretical difficulties. For this purpose it has been necessary to study brevity and avoid controversy. Hence, I have made few references to other authors, and I have almost altogether dispensed with foot-notes. But, though I have attempted to state rather than to defend my views, I believe that they are, in the main, those which, making exception for a few back eddies in the stream of modem thought, are winning their way to general acceptance among the more instructed and reflective men of our day.

It is necessary that I should state that this Essay is independent of a much larger work, entitled the 'Principles of Morals,' on which I was, some years ago, engaged with my predecessor, the late Professor Wilson.
