Excerpt from Two Generations in Perspective: Notable Events and Trends, 1896-1956
As its title indicates, this book is a survey, from many points of view, of the most meaningful developments in Jewish life, in the United States and abroad, during the past six decades, the most eventful, the most tragic, and yet, in some ways the most hopeful in Jewish history.
The book opens with a comprehensive historical survey of Jewish life, especially in America and in Palestine, and later in Israel, during the past sixty years. This survey is followed by several other chapters of a background character, such as those dealing with Zionism in the United States and in other countries, and a chapter tracing the development of community organiza tions in the United States.

This survey is followed by several other chapters of a background character, such as those dealing with Zionism in the United States and in other countries, and a chapter tracing the development of community organizations in the United States.
Part Two of the book is devoted also to the background of the period, but in the special field of religion in the United States. This is followed by two groups of chapters giving authoritative, factual information regarding specific organizations and movements. The first group is concerned with Jewish communal activities at home and abroad; the second, with public causes in the general community. It is hoped that in this manner, the book may serve to present a vivid composite picture of the most significant events and trends in Jewish life during the past half century, the most momentous in modern Jewish history.
As it will be seen, this book is dedicated to Dr. Israel Goldstein. It was prepared and is published in his honor. The sixtieth anniversary, in 1956, of his birth was widely celebrated in both the United States and Israel.
