Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A Manual for Students of Engineering

The greater part' of the matter contained in the following pages is based on the notes of lectures given to the day and evening students at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology during the last five sessions.

The book is intended for the use of those students of engineer ing who are desirous of obtaining a working knowledge of the fundamental principles involved in problems of machine and structural design. It should be found useful to candidates for the Third and Honours stages of the Examinations of the Board of Education, the examination for the admission of Associate Members to the Institution of Civil Engineers, as well as the examinations in the Engineering Schools of the Universities.

It will be seen that special attention has been paid to the unequal distribution of stress, and to the limits of elasticity in iron and steel. Many of the examples quoted are taken from experimental results obtained by the writer or his students. It is also to be noted that the majority of the proofs given are similar to those used in most of the text-books.

The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the many writers of books and scientific papers to which he has referred in collecting these notes. W. O. P.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the realm of material strength, providing a comprehensive guide to the fundamental principles that govern the behaviour of materials under stress. The author, an established expert in the field, draws on their wealth of knowledge to explore the relationship between stress, strain, and elasticity, laying the groundwork for understanding the mechanics of material behaviour. The book delves into various types of stress and strain, from tension and compression to shear and bending, examining their effects on materials at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels. It investigates the concept of elastic limits and introduces the concept of plastic deformation, providing insights into the behaviour of materials beyond their elastic range. Through detailed explanations and practical examples, the author sheds light on the factors that influence material strength, such as the modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio, enabling readers to comprehend the complex interplay between these properties. The book concludes by exploring the significance of material strength in engineering design, emphasizing the importance of selecting materials that meet specific performance requirements. This book is an invaluable resource for engineers, material scientists, and anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the principles governing material strength and their application in engineering practice. Its clear explanations, insightful examples, and comprehensive coverage make it an essential companion for anyone interested in the mechanics of materials. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
