Excerpt from Practical Exercises in Geometry
This book is an attempt to adapt the experimental method to the teaching Of Geometry in schools. The main Object of this method, sometimes called heuristic, is to make the student think for himself, to give him something to do with his hands for which the brain must be called in as a fellow-worker. The plan has been tried with success in the laboratory, and it seems to be equally well-suited to the Mathe matical class-room. Care has been taken to select exercises which can be easily performed in an ordinary room with ordinary materials. Doubtless there are many experiments, which might have been included, missing from the following collection but it is hoped that the course will be found sufficient, or at least that it will indicate a way Of presenting the work to a beginner.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers to experience geometry through hands-on experimentation. It was written in the early 1900s, a time when Euclidean geometry was the dominant system of instruction. The author, an assistant master at Eton College, sought to make the subject more accessible and engaging by encouraging students to actively explore geometric concepts. The book features a series of exercises designed to be performed in a classroom setting using readily available materials, guiding students through the measurement of lengths, angles, areas, and volumes, culminating in the construction of shapes and the exploration of geometric principles. The author stresses the importance of accuracy in measurement, recognizing that this precision is essential for valid geometric exploration. Ultimately, this book provides a unique lens through which to understand the historical evolution of geometry teaching methods and the enduring significance of hands-on learning in making abstract concepts concrete. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
