Excerpt from Buddhist Psychology: An Inquiry Into the Analysis and Theory of Mind in Pali Literature
MY book is an attempt, in the words of the Quest Series programme, to envisage faith fully something true in the history of a very interesting current in human ideas. This something true is the analysis and theory of mind in the movement and culture we understand by Early Buddhism, as well as in that of its direct descendant still thriving in Burma, Ceylon and Siam, called Thera vada, or the Doctrine of the Elders. This also is called Buddhism - some call it Hina Yana, some Southern Buddhism.

One of the most marked signs of the times is the close attention that is being paid to psychological research, the results of which are being followed with the greatest interest by an intelligent public, and the continued advance of which promises to be one of the most hopeful activities of modern science. The observation, analysis, and classification of mental phenomena are being pursued with untiring energy, and the problems of mind attacked on all sides with refreshing vigour. In brief, the new science of psychology seems to promise at no distant date to become one of the most fruitful, if not the most fruitful, field of human tillage.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the nuanced and complex world of Buddhist psychology, a field of study often overlooked by Western scholars. The author dives deep into the origins of this discipline, tracing its development from the earliest recorded expressions found in the Sutta-Pitaka, a collection of sacred Buddhist texts, to the later interpretations and elaborations of the scholastic commentaries. The book delves into the unique and often counter-intuitive concepts of the Buddhist mind, offering a rich and captivating analysis of consciousness, sense perception, and the interaction between mind and the external world. It goes beyond simply explaining Buddhist theories and explores the fascinating implications of the Buddhist perspective on concepts like the self and its relationship to both the physical and the mental realms. The author, a respected scholar of Buddhist philosophy, reveals how Buddhist thought emphasizes the impermanence of all things, including the mind itself, and how this focus on impermanence led to a distinct and rigorous approach to self-understanding and self-mastery. This book offers a valuable and engaging introduction to a rarely explored corner of the intellectual world, revealing the intricate workings of the Buddhist mind and its lasting impact on the world.
