Excerpt from Custom an Essay on Social Codes
In few spheres of sociological theory is the terminology so chaotic as in the literature on custom. One author might designate as "folkways" what another author terms "usages." What one author calls "custom," another might call "mores," while still a third might speak of "conventions." The present volume must be read with this problem in mind.
Terminological difficulties abound in a translation, since even such closely related languages as German and English do not always contain exactly corresponding terms. The German word "Sitte" has, in our opinion, more of a moral connotation than the English word "custom" which approaches the German "Brauch" (herein translated as "usage").

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex nature of custom, exploring its origins, functions, and significance in shaping social life. The author takes a unique approach, focusing on custom as a manifestation of a collective will, rather than simply a collection of habits or norms. Drawing inspiration from thinkers like Spencer and Jhering, the author sets out to clarify the often-overlooked aspects of custom, particularly its ability to act as a powerful force, influencing both individual and collective behaviour. The book examines the relationship between custom and religion, arguing that the reverence for ancestors, deeply ingrained in many cultures, forms the foundation of religious practice. It also highlights the tensions that arise when new beliefs and moral codes clash with established customs, particularly during periods of cultural transition. Ultimately, this book offers a profound exploration of custom, revealing its multifaceted nature and its enduring influence on societies across history.
