Sinopsis

Excerpt from A New System of Logic Adapted to Moral Philosophy

Any endeavour to improve the existing systems of Logic, must be a great undertaking; much more so the attempt to question the principles upon Which they are founded. Aristotle's Logic has maintained pre-eminence for more than two thousand years; d every effort to shake its foundations might he ed hopeless. It must be remembered, however, Aristotle's is a heathen system; and, it may well ooked upon with wonder and suspicion, that a philosopher should have so long given laws.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book re-examines logic and the syllogism, the linchpin of Aristotelian logic, which has held pre-eminence for over two thousand years. The author argues that the syllogism is shallow and inapplicable to the simplest reasoning, and that it is wholly incapable of affording a test of the real value of arguments. They believe the logic of Aristotle to be not wholly useless, and acknowledging its utility as a treatise on grammar, it is deemed tter employed as a branch of a more general system, rather than constituting the root and trunk. The author posits that syllogism, though suited to the times in which it flourished, is now nearly obsolete and contains within itself the seeds of a still higher system, whose growth and fruitfulness have hitherto been prevented, for want of being brought forth to the light and sunshine, and of being more duly cultivated. The author suggests that logic is not without its use, particularly as a help to the detection of fallacies in language, though it leaves untouched ideas themselves, except by secondary consequence. This book is applicable to the purposes of argument and persuasion but is incompetent to proof and is a valuable exploration of logic's evolution. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9781330288146_0
