Owing to the increasing importance attached to Phonetics, a sixth Part bearing the name of Sounds, Symbols, and Spellings, and consisting of three chapters, has been added to this book. The first chapter deals with "Letters, Accents, and Syllables," the next with "Vowel-Sounds and how they are spelt," the last with "Consonantal Sounds and how they are spelt." The system followed in this Parts that on which all the best authorities on Phonetics are agreed, viz. Dr. Sweet, Professor Skeat, Miss Laura Soames, and Dr. Murray (in the Introduction to the Oxford Dictionary).
Besides the new matter furnished in Part VI., an Appendix on Derivations (mainly based on Skeat's Etymological Dictionary) has been added at the close of the book. The Appendix gives five different lists of Derivatives - the first consisting of Words derived from Proper Names, the second of Words formed by Composition, the third of Derivatives from Teutonic (mainly A.S.) Roots, the fourth of Derivatives from Latin Roots, the fifth and last of Derivatives from Greek Roots.
Nothing has been added to the price of the book on account of the additional matter thus furnished, which consists altogether of seventy-six pages.
