Excerpt from Me and Mine
The Author has in this work endeavoured to explain and illustrate the correlation between the Soul and the Body. To enforce his conclusions he has cited innumerable passages from the Sacred Scriptures. Fancies could not surely be sustained by so many Facts. The main aim of the Author has been to show the reality and substantiality of the Soul and the Spiritual World, and that the Body and the Natural World are comparatively shadowy and unreal. The highest modern literature is full of this truth; but men fail either to discern or believe it even while reading and admiring the works in which it is taught. Spenser, Shakspere, Milton, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Goethe have all recognised and expressed this truth in fragments. Emerson teaches it out straight. Carlyle asserts it in Sartor Resartus from beginning to end.
