Of the extent to which the method of Tschirnhausen is available for the purpose of solving equations.

Preliminary Remarks and Propositions.

1. The earliest uniform method for effecting the algebraical resolution of equations is, I believe, that proposed by Tschirnhausen in the Acts of Leipsic for the year 1683.

The point of view from which the problem of the resolution of equations is here contemplated is very different from that selected by later mathematicians.
