Sinopsis

Engage with a thoughtful tale of faith, doubt, and conscience set against a thoughtful English village and its clergymen.

This edition of Geraldine, Vol. 1 follows a young woman’s struggle to reconcile Protestant ideals with Catholic mystery, as she and her friends navigate contentious debates, church life, and personal loyalties.

Set in a world of scholars, clergymen, and everyday faith, the story blends intimate dialogue with wider questions about tradition, liturgy, and spiritual authority. It charts Geraldine’s inquiries, Mr. Everard’s challenging conversations, and the social pressures that accompany any push for change in a close-knit community.
  • Explore arguments about the Eucharist, church practices, and the idea of revival within the English church.
  • Meet a cast of clergy and friends, each with distinct views on faith, doubt, and devotion.
  • Follow the character’s moral and spiritual development as she weighs belief, membership, and conscience.
  • Encounter historical references to early Christian rites and liturgies woven into the narrative.
Ideal for readers who enjoy historical religious debates, character-driven drama, and moral exploration within a refined 19th‑century setting.

Excerpt from Geraldine, Vol. 1: A Tale of Conscience

As Geraldine half breathed, half pronounced, this supplication, there arose from the outskirts of the town a shout of mingled voices, and, as the sounds died murmuring away, another shout arose, another, and another, while a still small voice seemed to interpret them, Geraldine, thy prayer is heard 1.

Excerpt from Geraldine, Vol. 1: A Tale of Conscience

Each in his hidden sphere of joy or woe
Our hermit spirits dwell, and range apart;
Our eyes see all around in gloom, or glow
Hues of their own, fresh borrowed from the heart.

Keeble's Christian Year.

It was the hour of sunset, as from the oriel window of her apartment, Geraldine Carrington gazed o'er the broad lands of which she was heiress. The skies poured forth a-flood of light and glory. The clouds reposing tranquilly above the distant hills, formed that mysterious combination of earth and sky, so emblematic of the soul of man; and their reflected hues sparkling in the far-stretched bend of the river, seemed, in each ripple of that moving joy, to bring beneath the feet of her who sadly mused, messages of peace, and hope, and love! For a time yielding to these sweet influences, Geraldine leaned yet farther from the casement to look around the utmost extent of country.
