Excerpt from The Man of to-Day
New York to listen to a message which in its invigorating austerity may be called a Gospel of Winter. The most distinctive and powerful utterance of America is studied in the Message of Emerson. A type of to-day's ideals embodied in character and translated into action is shown in Reminiscences of Edward Everett Hale. Last of all we come back to our Blessed Company, and read the meaning of life as it is interpreted through the sacrament of long married years, under the guise of a Silver Wedding Gift.

Excerpt from The Man of to-Day
A child is playing on the sea-beach with some smooth bright pebbles. Presently he sets to work to arrange them in the figure of a man. Little mosaic-maker, he does not know he is practicing the rudiments of the art that gave splendor to glorious churches like St. Mark's in Venice. Here is a round white stone, - he puts that for the head. Here are some bigger ones which a little arrangement shapes into a body. Then he supplies long and slender arms and legs; he adds an ornamental hat, - and behold, a man! And the kindly looker-on smiles at the little artist's achievement, and then looks off over the splendor of cliff and island and the "immeasurable laughter" of sunlit sea.
So, I bring together my handful of pebbles, these papers. Rather they are bits of day, moulded each one as the day's impulse moved me.
