Excerpt from The ABC of the Foreign Exchanges: A Practical Guide
The substance is here reproduced of a short course of lectures on the Foreign Exchanges, which the writer was invited to deliver in the early part of the current year before the members of the Institute of Bankers, and which were afterwards published in the Journal of the Institute. To justify their reappearance in book form a few words of explanation appear necessary. It is manifest, in view of the able and exhaustive treatment that the abstract theory has received in the well- known treatise by Mr. Goschen, and in other standard works, that it would tend to no useful purpose to serve up a mere rick réchauffé of those general principles which are already familiar to all educated men; and that simply to say over again what has been much better said before would be only trifling with the reader. More than this is required, and more has been attempted.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the intricacies of foreign exchange rates, aiming to clarify the systems that manage them. The author begins by explaining the fundamentals of these rates and how they are created by the relationship between countries' currencies and economies. He then examines the theory of foreign exchange, using examples to illustrate how imbalances in international trade and investment can cause fluctuations in rates. The author emphasizes the role of the gold standard in stabilizing exchange rates during the 19th century. He also analyzes the impact of economic and political events on exchange rates, such as the American Civil War, the two World Wars, and the rise and fall of the Bretton Woods system. The book concludes by discussing the increasing volatility of exchange rates in recent decades and the challenges this poses for international businesses and policymakers.
