Excerpt from The Latin Third Declension: A Study in Metaplasm and Syncretism
The Latin third declension has been selected as the basis for a discussion of metaplasm for the reason that it is a typical instance of such declensional amalgamation. In addition to the presentation of facts bearing directly upon this subject, an effort has been made to discuss the relations of the third declension to the corresponding systems of other languages. The treatment of syncretism is of a more general nature, including the phenomena of all declensions and of the Italic, Latin, and oscan-umbrian periods. In the third section, it has been my endeavor to discuss in detail the origins of the case endings peculiar to each lan guage and to define the metaplastic and syncretic effects, whet ever manifested.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the phenomenon of metaplasm, a process by which loan words are transferred from their original declension into another one. The author meticulously examines how, over time, these words are further influenced by analogy, which either establishes new inflections or coexists with original forms. The book establishes the context for metaplasm within Indo-European languages before exploring how this process helped shape Latin's third declension system. Drawing on many examples, the author shows the range of metaplasm's effects on different case forms. Scholars of linguistics and Latin will value this detailed analysis for its insights into the evolution of languages and case systems.
