Excerpt from Metaphysical Inquiry Into Method, Objects, and Result of Ancient and Modern Philosophy
In the following Inquiry into the Me thod, Objects, and Result, of the Ancient and Modern systems of Philosophy, I have no intention, nor would I presume to set them in array against each other: but have endeavoured patiently to examine the foundations upon which they rest, and to draw from the great storehouse of antiquity some speculations, which have been too generally slighted or over looked by the Metaphysician and Philo sopher, but which seem to be of such practical utility, that they may tend to the advancement of science, even amid the brilliant discoveries of modern times.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the evolution of philosophy and the methods philosophers have used over time to understand the world around them. The author argues that the methods of discovery, or the tools used in all ages, have been much alike, though their names may have changed. The focus is on analogical reasoning and induction, and their roles in advancing science. The author illustrates the differences between natural history and causation and argues that both are valuable subjects of philosophical inquiry. By looking at these subjects from a historical perspective, the author shines a light on the development of scientific thought and the ways of thinking that have shaped our understanding of the universe.
