Such an emigration would prove a seasonable relief at the present moment to those districts of the mother country, of which the inhabitants (as, for instance, those of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) are at present suffering extreme destitution, from the want of employment and the want of subsistence.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a historical perspective on the transportation of convicts from England to Australia, a practice initiated in the 18th century to alleviate overcrowding in British prisons. The author, drawing upon his own experiences and observations during his 13-year stay in the Australian penal colonies, provides a unique analysis of the system's effectiveness and its impact on both the convicts and the colonies themselves. He discusses the evolution of the system from its inception to its eventual discontinuation, exploring the challenges and controversies it faced along the way. The book sheds light on the lives of transported convicts, the conditions they endured, and the lasting effects their presence had on Australian society and the development of the nation. By examining the successes and failures of the transportation system, the author offers valuable insights into the complexities of punishment, rehabilitation, and social integration.
