For the bald outline of the main plot of his Play Shakespeare may have gone to any one of many sources; for the story in a rough shape is told, among others, by Geoffrey of Monmouth, by La amon, by Robert of Gloucester, by Spenser, by Holirl'fied. In the opinion of some modern editors it is to the last that we must look as the most likely original, but it seems more probable that, as Furness suggests, the direct source was the Chronicle History of King Leir dramatized, according to Malone and Halliwell, in 1593 or 1594. The underplot of Gloucester find his sons is moulded on the story in Sidney's Arcadia of the Paphlagonian unkind king, and his kind son, first related by the son, then by the blind father.
