We all know that the proper way for a man to learn is by practice. But the two, practice and theory together will make a man more per feet. Reading of other mechanics' ideas will enable a man to better his own ideas and perform his work more perfectly.

Practical Knowledge is the principal requirement in an engineer and mechanic, and the proper way to acquire it, is by actual work in factory and repair shop, or about the engine. But a lucid explanation of the inner arrangement of a complicated machine or apparatus, an easy demonstration of a difficult point, and the art of expressing in clear language the knowledge gained, cannot be obtained by the most assiduous physical labor.

They require a different practice: a careful training both in understanding the point of the question, and in giving a correct, complete and concise answer. As it will soon be impossible for an engineer to fill any desirable position without passing a severe test, the need of a thorough drill in the mental work is self-evident.
