The criticism offered on all works in the English language dealing with musical terms is the lack of conciseness or a meaningless definintion. Take the character called a "note". The word is incorrectly used in every music journal and in dictionaries musical and otherwise. Where "tone" is meant or a "key" on the piano the word "note" is used - musicians of reputation as well as the uncultured teacher of music, use expressions that are incorrect. The following is clipped from a widely circulated journal and it was written by a musical authority.

"Place the hand on the key-board and push down five white notes."

This is an illustration of the misuse of musical terms.
