Sinopsis

Explore a careful, methodical look at psychic phenomena through a documented circle of researchers and mediums. This nonfiction work presents a detailed account of experiments, setups, and observations surrounding levitation, raps, and other physical effects claimed to come from an unseen world. It emphasizes rigorous conditions, repeatable measurements, and the interplay between experimenters and the alleged operators.

The book takes readers inside the experimental process, from selecting a serious, well-coordinated circle to managing lighting, seating, and apparatus. It explains how results are sought, tested, and verified, and it discusses the challenges of studying phenomena that occur beyond ordinary perception. Throughout, the author frames conclusions with careful notes on methods and limits.

What you’ll experience

  • A clear account of the circle’s composition, discipline, and the roles of mediums and sitters.

  • Descriptions of the equipment and measurement techniques used to gauge forces during levitation.

  • Insights into the balance between preparation, equilibrium, and spontaneous effects in seances.

  • Thoughtful reflections on what the results suggest about the nature of psychic phenomena and research challenges.

Ideal for readers of science and spiritual inquiry who want a measured, testable perspective on psychic events, and for anyone seeking a historical view of early experimental psychical research.

Excerpt from The Reality of Psychic Phenomena Raps, Levitations, Etc

The experiments described were carried out during portions of the years 1915 and 1916, many of them being recorded in the pages of Light at the time. I have endeavoured in this work to put them more or less in logical sequence so that the reader may understand the processes that led me to enunciate the cantilever theory. Much of the text is, however, now published for the first time.

I am indebted to Mr Seamus Stoupe of the Art Department of the Technical Institute, Belfast, for the two photographs of apparatus; and I have to express my thanks to Messrs 7. T. Avery, Ltd., for the use of their weighing and measuring machines.

I do not discuss in this book the question of the identity of the invisible operators. That is left for another occasion. But in order that there may be no misapprehension, I wish to state explicitly that I am personally satisfied they are the spirits of human beings who have passed into the Beyond.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from The Reality of Psychic Phenomena Raps, Levitations, Etc

Since the first edition of this work appeared I have again gone over most of the experiments recorded. I have found it necessary to make but few alterations. The only notable exception is in the incomplete experiment No. 55, in which there was a misconception due to my being unable at the time to make a thorough test. Instead of an increase of weight as was surmised, I have found that the medium really decreases in weight.

During recent months I have carried out a considerable further amount of experimental work with Miss Goligher and other mediums. I intend to publish the results in separate volumes, which I think is preferable to including within the covers of a single book too large a mass of data. It is best, I think, that the interested reader should absorb this subject in fairly small does.

I wish to record my thanks to the editor of Light, who was helped and encouraged me in many ways.
