Xcb. io-0-oi The McDowell Family. MrDowel is a Lowland corruption of the Highland MeDougall, the name of an old famous clan. Our ancestors were once powerful in old Scotland, even making kings. A John McDowell, a Romish priest converted to Protestantism, and a refugee with Calvin in Geneva, is not improbably our remote ancestor. In this country our records begin with Ephraim McDowell. Ephraim McDowell sailed from London derry, Ireland, on May 9, 1729, in the "George and Ann," landed at Philadelphia; settled first in Hunterdon county, New Jersey, then moved to Somerset county, on the Raritan.
