When he was observed by the crowd, there is at once an opening made to let him pass through. From his pale face, and the tear on his cheek, it is evident that there is some great trouble oppressing him; and that he is bringing his grief, whatever it was, to the Man of Sorrows. The Saviour could not fail to be well known to him. As I previously remarked, it is not unlikely the Ruler was seated in his chair of honour in the synagogue, on the occasion of Christ casting out the devils from the man who was possessed; also that he was one of those who went to plead in behalf of the good centurion's dying servant.
