Sinopsis

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1849 Excerpt: ...--Stratford-le-bow--Bromley--And Stepney. Our concluding ramble, deficient though it be in green lanes and country villages, is by no means destitute of ecclesiological interest. To commence with §f. SluguStme, Hackney, a large north-eastern suburb to the metropolis. An early Third-Pointed tower is the only vestige of the original church, which was removed about half a century ago. This tower has a good west window of three lights, ogee, cinquefoiled, and supermulh'oned, but no west doorway. The tower arch, now bricked up, is four-centred, the belfry windows of three lights, the parapet embattled, a newel turret throughout, and a peal of eight bells. From drawings which yet remain of the old church, it appears to have been a large Third-Pointed building, with aisles extending to its east end, and clerestory throughout. The present church, erected in the same churchyard, and dedicated, we know not why, to 3)oi)K, is a vast room without a single pillar: for ugliness, probably without an equal in the United Kingdom. It possesses a large organ, by England; the old church could boast of one by Snetzler; a few brasses have been preserved, viz., Dr. Christopher Urswick, priest, in cope, 1521, engraved in Waller's Series, Part II.; this brass is mounted on a canopied altar tomb, and is now placed in the north-east porch; John Lymly, Esq., in armour, and wife, 1545; Arthur Dericote and three wives, 1562; Hugh Johnson, in a pulpit, mural, 1618. Some idea of the numerous brasses that once existed may be obtained from the fact, that there remain to this day, in the church-yard adjoining the old tower, nearly twenty slabs bearing indents of their matrices.
