(Acts xx. 28) And the judgment pronounced against those shepherds who have never sought out that which was lost, nor brought again that which was driven away, nor bound up that which was broken, nor strengthened that which was sick. (See Ezekiel xxxiv. 4.) If the two pence spoken of in the parable does indeed refer to the preaching of the Word and the adminstration of the Sacraments, how diligent should I be to preach the Word in season and out of season, and how earnest in my exhortations to you to receive that blessed Sacrament which from the earliest days of the Church has been looked upon as the binding up of the soul's wounds, the staunching of the ever-flowing fountain of evil in the heart. Oh, that I may be found, as the evening of life draws on, more and more earnestly engaged in that most holy work. May I be found amongst those blessed servants who, when the Lord shall come, shall be faithfully discharging the office of overseer in the Lord's household, giving them their portion of meat in due season. And lest at any time zeal should flag, or love should wax cold, I will often think of that gracious promise which we have been considering--" Whatsoever thou spendest more," i.e. in prayers, in watchings, in fastings, in earnest exhortations, public and private, in strong crying and tears for the salvation of my people, "When I come again I will repay thee." but when religion opens the eyes, and shows us how hopeless is the state of the soul without God, then we discover the extent of our obligations to our Deliverer.
