It was fastened on the shoulders with a very magnificent fibula, or button, made of two precious stones set in gold, on which were engraved the twelve names of the twelve tribes of Israel, six names on each stone; so equally were the letters divided, that there were twenty-five on each stone, and Joseph's name was written Jehoseph, to make up the equal number, and so he is called and written in Psalm lxxxi, 6, in Hebrew. The ephod was always considered essential to divine worship, for without it no person attempted to enquire of God. 3. The breast-plate of judgment, or oracle, was a piece of cloth doubled, one span square, and of simi Dr. Lightfool's Works, vol. i, p. 905. There were two sorts of Ephods; one of plain linen for the priests, and the splendid one of the high priest. Ephod conies from the root ISd, aphad, he tied, or girded, and seems to ha.ve been a general name of a garment worn by persons of distinction. See 2 Sam. vi, 14; 1 Sam. ixii, 18; 1 Sam. ii. 18; lar texture and workmanship with the ephod, in which twelve precious stones were set, each bearing one of the names of the twelve sons of Jacob engraved on it This breastplate was fastened upon the ephod by rings of gold at the four corners, the two upper rings being fastened to the shoulder pieces with golden chains, and the two lower tied to the girdle of the ephod with blue cords or fillets. And also the Urim and Thummim were put in the breastplate. These two words signify Lights and Perfections, and were emblematical of divine illumination.
