Allan Nevins (1890-1971) began his career as a journalist in New York City before joining the department of history at Columbia University, later becoming Dewitt Clinton Professor of History. While at Columbia, he created the first oral history program in the United States. He is the author of more than fifty books mainly in the areas of political and business history, including Grover Cleveland: A Study in Courage, The Emergence of Modern America, and The American States During and After the Revolution, 1775-1789.
