Reseña del editor

Thb present selections for translation into German are intended for students who have read a few hundred pages of easy German prose and have had some training in translating simple sentences into German. At this stage of their adyancement, a liberal amount of comparatively easy oomi osition work seems to be a better means of fixing in their minds the German vocabulary, accidence and syntax, than a lesser amount of more difficult exercises would be. In the choice of the Materials ,adaptability to Grerman rendering has been the first criterion. For this reason, a number of translations from the German by English and American translators have been included. It is hoped, however, that, upon the whole, the selections will be found to contain a fair amount of English idiom. The original texts have been somewhat condensed and, now and then, subjected to slight modifications in order to remove special difficulties of construction or idiom, or avoid comparatively rare and useless words. But neither in this adaptation of the texts to the purposes of the book, nor in the Notes, has it been the editors intention to remove all difficulties or supplant the teacher. On the contrary, many opportunities have purposely been offered to test the students own knowledge and power, while the editor has merely avoided the nnneoessary massing of difficulties.
