Sinopsis

Elements of the Theory of the Newtonian Potential Function is a book written by B. O. Peirce and first published in 1902. The book is a comprehensive study of the mathematical theory of the Newtonian potential function, which is used to calculate the gravitational and electrostatic potentials of a system of point masses or charges. The book is divided into three parts. The first part covers the basic concepts and definitions of the potential function, including the Laplace equation and its solution. The second part discusses the applications of the potential function in various fields, such as hydrodynamics, elasticity, and electromagnetism. The final part explores the properties of the potential function, including its singularities and asymptotic behavior.Peirce's work is considered a seminal text in the field of mathematical physics and has been cited extensively in subsequent research. The book is written in a clear and concise style, with numerous examples and exercises to aid in understanding. It is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers in the field of mathematical physics. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Reseña del editor

This book is almost entirely made up of lecture-notes which from time to time during the last four years I have written out for the use of students who have begun with me the study of what I have ventured to call, after Neumann, theN ewtonian Potential Function. The notes were intended for readers somewhat familiar with the principles of theD ifferential and Integral Calculus, but unacquainted with many of the methods commonly used in applying Mathematics to the study of pliysical problems. These students, I learned, found it difficult to get from any single book in English a treatment of the subject at once elementary enough to be within their easy comprehension, and at the same time suited to the purposes of such of them as intended eventually to pursue the subject farther, or wished, without necessarily making a specialty of Mathematical Physics, to prepare themselves to study Experimental Physics thoroughly and understandingly. What is here printed seems to have been of use to some of those who have read it in manuscript, and it is hoped that it may now be helpful to a larger number of students.
