Another circumstance is yet behind, which forebodes consequences of a still more unpleasant nature. When impelled by temporary distress, or the fear of losing when they had nothing to pay, this wretched woman has persuaded her complying husband to consent to the previous arrangement of signs and tokens, by which they many insure success. This business has been carried on for a considerable time, very much to their advantage; but some have discovered the signals, and other begin to suspect that they practise these arts which degrade them to the level of common pick-pockets.
