Excerpt: ... II. WAYS LEADING TO THE WAY. OT to "one narrow partial spot confined" is God, and not to one narrow partial way. Who shall declare His way? His way is in the sea, and His path in the great waters; His way is in the sanctuary and in the midst of His holy temple. "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!" And yet, as "the wind bloweth where it listeth, and we hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it cometh, or whither it goeth," but are able to tell by the effects it has produced, in bending the branches and scattering the leaves, that it has been there; so, although we cannot by taking counsel find out God in His eternal purposes, nor wait for Him in the way which our judgment has prophesied He will come, we can trace His way by its effects, and we know that His "way is perfect." From whence come the winds? Not always from the south, not always from the east, but from all points of the compass. From whence cometh the Lord with His message of mercy to us? Not always from sorrow, not always from bereavement, but from every avenue which leads up to the heart. Surely Cowper made a great mistake when he wrote those lines, "The path of sorrow, and that path alone, Leads to the land where sorrow is unknown." No, our hearts tell us this is not strictly true. Nowhere in God's universe do we see uniformity, but endless variety. In all the lower forms of life there is variety in infinity, and the influences requisite for the support of each individual life are adapted to its necessity; and in the higher forms of life the diversity is as great: no two minds are alike, no two hearts beat with the same emotions, no two histories run exactly parallel, and the influence...
