In this offering of yourself to God really consists the secret of Christian perfection. Oh, for the love of God, and out of pity to yourselves, make this offering at once--fully and entirely--and renew it frequently. The full and entire offering of our whole self into the hands of God, who is our Father infinitely good, is exceedingly consoling even to think of. What will it be to those who have the happiness of making it in reality? What confidence, what peace, what joy, it must pour into the depths of your heart! The soul that once has the grace to make this offering fully and perfectly is, I should say, sure of becoming a saint; for it seems to me that the Divine Goodness will enfold her in such a loving embrace that God will never more allow her to fall away from Him, but will take delight in her for all eternity. § 3. That we should not relax our efforts because we have not succeeded hitherto. Do not allow this your desire to be chilled by the pernicious thought that you have perhaps more than once before endeavoured to tread in the path of Christian perfection and have not succeeded, and that consequently you would not succeed now were you to begin again. Malignant suggestion--malignant as the demon who has caused so many to abandon themselves to a fatal despair! If you did not succeed on former occasions it was only because you had not the will to succeed. God, having given you a longing for Christian perfection, would also have given you the grace to acquire it; for He never does what is useless, and it would be useless to implant in us a good desire, and not give us the necessary grace to bring it into eff...
