This is a most important condition, and depends almost wholly upon the teacher. In addition to a thorough study of the selections, teachers should give special study to making the work of the reading class pleasant and interesting; without these conditions it can hardly be profitable. The reading work of the school should be so conducted as to cultivate a love of reading; the Home Reading of the children is, therefore, a proper subject for the teacher's consideration. Inquire and advise as to this: induce children to be_ regularly reading one good book;. have reports of the books read, with oral or written outlines and some of the principal incidents. Such reports stimulate reading, and are excellent Language work. Work of the Quarter--Fourth Reader to page 60. Practical applications of the suggestions of the General Notes. Spelling.--General Notes.--A person should be able to spell the words of his own vocabulary; he will not ordinarily be called upon to spell any other. And so the material that should be usedin spelling exercises, is an important consideration. Spelling books arranged according to sounds and combinations of letters, or length of words, are not of the highest utility. Many of the words are unusual and technical, and entirely beyond the present knowledge of the pupils. If the reading work of the school is properly conducted, it furnishes the best material for spelling exercises. The reading text is mainly literary and not technical; and as it is carefully studied and thoroughly mastered, its words are entering into the vocabulary...
