Excerpt: ... parent rock, if it maybe so termed, varies in breadth from four to ten, or twelve feet, and is about thirty yards in length. It is decorated on each side with moss, yew, and pendent ivy; and the gloominess of it is much deepened by the numerous trees that grow on the steep hill high above, and hang over it; the whole forming a romantic group not easy to be described. The ground adjoining these rocks is overspread with a multitude of stones of large size, covered with moss and wild plants; and amidst them are numerous tall ashes and elms, some of them invested with a mantle of ivy to their very summits. Those who are in search of picturesque rocky scenery and delight in picturesque description, may here find more to gratify tTieir taste, if they really have any, than they can at Chee Tor, at the High Tor, or any other of those Tori, on the delineation of which they dwell with so much apparent satisfaction. The Matlock water springing in great abundance from limestone rocks is of the clearest kind, and having a temperature of 68 degrees, it has a claim to be admitted into the short list of thermal waters, that are to be found in England. It has not been analysed with much exactness; but it has been found to contain a email quantity of a neutral salt, probably muriat of soda, and about as much of an earthly salt, which is chiefly calcareous. Its calcareous contents are quickly deposited, when it is exposed to the air, incrusting every substance that is immersed in it. Curious specimens of, this-incrustation are to be seen at, what are called the Petrifying Wells at Matlock; and of the same nature is the tophus, or tufa, in the bank on the west side of the river, which is much employed here as a building material.
