"Don't fight," I said; " I 'll give you a diagnosis free of charge. Gold mines, especially when falling, produce a jaundiced appearance, while pork" Becker and Lee, the two men concerned, scoffed at me, and Becker called me a jolly old humbug. It is one of my greatest trials, this determination on the part of many not to take me seriously. "I daresay he knows, though," said Lee, surveying me critically. "Bet you he doesn't!" said Becker; and when I had modestly selected a lemon squash as my drink, it was decided that the man who was wrong in his estimate of my knowledge should pay for it. "Proceed, gentlemen," I said, lighting a cigarette as an aid to judicial impartiality. "Been to see your friend Mrs. Smythe lately?" asked Becker.
