CHAPTER IX. ON TOUCH-PAPER--QUICK MATCH--SLOW MATCH--PRIMING POWDERS-PORTFIRES--FLOWERPOTS--MARUOONS. TOUCH-PAPER. Touch-paper is made by saturating paper with a solution of Nitre. The paper in use for this purpose is the dark blue Double-crown, from 11 lbs. to 13 lbs. per ream. DIRECTIONS. Cut the sheets of paper in half, and make the following solution:--Nitre 1 oz. Boiling water 1 pint. Do not use this solution until cold. Brush the paper with it on one side, seeing that there is no part unwetted by it. When dry it is fit for use. Paper of greater weight than 13 lbs. per ream must not be used; the most generally useful is that weighing 11 lbs. QUICK MATCH. This is simply cotton, of the required number of strands, saturated and covered with paste made as follows:--F Gunpowder 2 lbs. Starch 1 oz. Water H pint. Make the starch with the given quantity of water, as for laundry purposes, and boil it. Put the gunpowder in a glazed pan or basin; and add the Btafch when boiling little by little, stirring all the while, and taking care to keep the paste thus formed as free as possible from lumps. Then provide some ball cotton, of six or seven strands for thick Match, or of four strands for thin Match. The quantity of gunpowder paste given above will be sufficient to make at least 120 yards of Match. The preparation of Quick Match will find employment for two paire of hands. "While one person gradually coils in the length of cotton, another must press it below the surface of the gunpowder paste with a smooth piece of wood...
