From opposite the house a glaring electric light cast now elongating, now contracting shadows of the hurrying vehicles, and made surrounding objects mysterious and ghostly with its flickering intensity. The usual roar of the street was deadened by the white covering to the stones, and on everything within sight descended the silent snow, cold as human charity, pure and impartial as the divine. Carriage after carriage rolled up to the door, and, depositing its aggregate of silks and diamonds, broadcloth and humanity, each in turn silently hurried away and was lost in the uncertain distance.
