Common Core Mathematics is the most comprehensive Common Core State Standards-based mathematics curriculum available today. The modules are sequenced and paced to support the teaching of mathematics as an unfolding story that follows the logic of mathematics itself. They embody the instructional "shifts" and the standards for mathematical practice that are fundamental to the CCSS. Each module contains a sequence of les- sons that combine conceptual understanding, fluency, and application to meet the demands of each topic in the module. Formative assessments are included to support data-driven instruction. The modules are written by teams of master teachers and mathematicians. With Common Core Mathematics, fifth graders learn about developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); extending division to two-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and developing understanding of volume. Common Core Learning Standards Addressed in Grade 5, Module 2: 5.OA.1, 5.OA.2, 5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.2, 5.NBT.5, 5.NBT.6, 5.NBT.7, and 5.MD.1. Sequence of Grade 5 Modules: Module 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions; Module 2: Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations; Module 3: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions; Module 4: Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions; Module 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area; and Module 6: Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane.
