English of the original version. I am no great scholar, being more interested in the humanity of things than in their aesthetics ;and, in the retelling of this story, I find that I have been completely overpowered by the original version, so that the language in which this history is here set forth is no language. I have, however, let it stand, as I feel that the leisurely dialect that I have instinctively adopted is more in keeping with the character and surroundings of Silas Fordred than the crisp, clear-cut phraseology of to-day.
