At the request of a devoted daughter of my late dearlyloved brother in Christ, Mr. GEORGE COWELL, I willingly prefix a few lines to the touchingly affectionate and accurate record of his remarkable life, and not less extraordinary labours in the vineyard of our Divine Master. The task I undertake is one which, though necessarily tempered by a measure of sadness, yet teems with celestial hopes and joys. For, it is one of the peculiar pleasures of Christian experience to trace the footsteps of the flock, especially of those members of it concerning whom we can recall blessed seasons, when, ere they had run the appointed race and had finished their pilgrim course, we journeyed with them on terms of sweetest fellowship. The late Mr, Cowell, whose love in the Lord I had the privilege of enjoying for upwards of twenty-four years, was no ordinary man. Certainly, he was no ordinary Christian. His natural gifts were considerable. These, moreover, were Divinely sanctified, and faithfully laid out in the service of the Lord Jesus. A mong his many endowments was spiritual aptitude as an expositor of the Holy Scriptures both by lip and pen.
