R(ichard) Austin Freeman (April 11, 1862 London - September 28, 1943Gravesend) was a British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring themedico-legal forensic investigator Dr Thorndyke. He invented the inverteddetective story and used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeonin his novels. A large proportion of the Dr Thorndyke stories involvegenuine, but often quite arcane, points of scientific knowledge, from areassuch as tropical medicine, metallurgy and toxicology. Austin Freeman wasthe youngest of the five children of tailor Richard Freeman and Ann MariaDunn.
