Sinopsis

Most organisations have heard of design thinking. Fewer have heard of TRIZ, Dynamic Capabilities, or Pugh's Controlled Convergence. All three have stronger evidence bases. This book covers all thirty.

The 30 Best Innovation Methods is the definitive practitioner and academic reference for the methods, tools, and frameworks that drive real innovation, written by an engineer and researcher who has spent a career deploying them in the field.

The thirty methods in this book were not chosen by preference. They were selected through a systematic topographic survey of the innovation-methodology landscape (the author's doctoral research at University College Dublin) assessing methods in active use across commercial, academic, humanitarian, and public-sector practice. Selection required documented empirical use, demonstrable real-world uptake, and a teachable, repeatable structure.

What makes this book different

Most innovation books cover one method deeply or survey many methods superficially. This book does neither. Each of the thirty chapters treats a single method as a serious engineering artefact: where it came from, how it actually works, a step-by-step practical application, an honest real-world case study, documented failure modes, and full academic references. Nothing is promoted and nothing is dismissed. Every method is treated as a fit-for-purpose tool with specific contexts where it excels and specific contexts where it does not.

What you will find inside

  • All 30 leading innovation methods, from Heuristics (1974) to the Double Helix Innovation Model (2020), each covered in full
  • A classification framework that maps all 30 methods across three dimensions: Method Type, Focus Classification, and Structural Classification
  • A built-in 5-Minute Decision Tool that narrows the field of thirty to a working shortlist based on your specific context
  • Methods spanning product development, quality management, strategic management, creativity, human-centred design, and organisational innovation
  • Harvard-style citations and engagement with the primary academic literature throughout
  • The Double Helix Innovation Model : a new applied-innovation methodology developed through Irish Research Council-funded doctoral research, designed for contexts where technical development and organisational viability must advance simultaneously

Who this book is for
  • Engineers and product developers who need to select and deploy an innovation methodology
  • Innovation consultants and facilitators building or improving their methodological toolkit
  • Graduate students and researchers in innovation management, design, and engineering
  • Executives and strategy teams evaluating which innovation approach fits their organisation
  • Lecturers and faculty teaching innovation, design thinking, or product development courses
